Wednesday 9th nov 05 - what a lovely photo, even if I say it myself.
We met with the doctors today, first the good news, they are pleased with his progress after the heart operation, the blood pressure is a bit low in one of his legs so they are keeping an eye on it and hoping it sorts itself out.
Cai however is having trouble breathing all the time, and it's taking away all his effort just to breathe, The doctor's think this is due to his vocal chords closing when he is stressed so after a lengthy discussion with his team of doctors and carers we agreed to let them operate again. He will be back in theatre on Tuesday next week for a tracheotomy, this will allow him to breathe easier but it means Kerstin and I will need training on how to change the tube and vacuum it out etc - I wish i had paid more attention in biology now but I certainly didn't expect to be doing this sort of thing when I was at school.
It will mean a big lifestyle change for us but we also had a chat with the social worker who will help us sort out nursing assistance for when he first comes home e.g night cover or when kerstin needs to go shopping whilst I work or vice versa. We hope he will be out for christmas.
We are not sure if this is good news or bad but it seems the only course of action at the moment and if his vocal chords start working the tracheotomy can always be removed. It is also hoped he can be taught to swallow so maybe we will go for a pint together in a few years time after all - if its not been banned by then.
The doctor did say that she felt Kerstin and myself were a good team and had no concerns about our ability to cope with the situation, which was nice.
